Korean Ginseng, The Supreme Herb

Effects of Ginseng Described in Oriental Materia Medica

Korean Ginseng has been widely used as a miraculous herbal medicine, “The Elixir of Life” in China, Japan, and Korea for many centuries. Record of its efficacy and pharmacological use as well as prescriptions including Korean Ginseng appeared in early Chinese medical books, such as Shengnong Bengcao Jing and Shanghan Lun written about 2,000 years ago.
The Shanghan Lun (The Treatment of Typhoid) written by Zhangji during the Han Dynasty in China (ca. 200 A.D.) Is the first volume of Chinese materia medica and still is used as a textbook for Chinese medicine. Panax Ginseng was included in 21 of a total of 113 prescriptions described in Shanghan Lun. The remedies for which Panax Ginseng was described includes headaches, lack of strength, fatigue, dizziness, nausea, asthma, neurasthenia, and impotence. It was also recommended as a prophylactic agent against collapse caused by excessive perspiration, forgetfullness, dizziness, polyuria, uterine hemorrhage, tubercolosis, meningitis in children, blood and body fluid defficiencies and anorexia.
The Shengnong Bengcao Jing (Ancient Chinese Medical Textbooks, 3 Volumes) was written by Shengnong and Shengnong Bengcao Jing Jiju (A Simplified Version of Shengnong’s Ancient Chinese Medical Textbooks, 7 Volumes) was written by Tae Hong Jing during the Liang Dynasty of China (circa 500 A.D.) These books described in detail the pharmacological effects of Panax Ginseng as a “mild medicine”. Mild medicine is a tonic that invigorates the body and prolongs life. Long-term excessive intake produces no harmful effects on various internal disorders are described as follows:

  1. Strengthens the viscera (internal organs of the body).
  2. Functions as a tranquilizer.

  4. Increases resistance to microbial infection and diseases.
  5. Improves vision.
  6. Improves mental work capacity.
  7. Improve one’s general physical condition and prolongs life with long-term administration.

The Chingyueh Chuanshu (Treating Diseases by Normalizing the Body Temperature) is one of the representative medical books of the Ming Dynasty (1624 A.D.) Of China. In this book, Panax Ginseng is used mainly as a tonic to invigorate weak bodies, but rarely used as curative medicine although it is included as an ingredients in 509 of a total of 2,218 prescriptions (22.9%).
Oriental Medicine is classified into three groups by its efficacy: mild, moderate, and curative medicines. Mild medicine is a tonic that invigorates the body and prolongs life. Long-term excessive intake produces no harmful or habitual ill effects.
In 1958, I.I. Brekhamann and I.V. Dardymov jointly presented the “Adaptogen Theory.” The title of the thesis is “A New Substance of Plant Origin Which Increases Non-Specific Resistance.” Adaptogen is recognized as a substance which increases one’s stamina and general resistance to various diseases and non-specifically improves physical debility.
Pharmacological effects of Korean Ginseng in relation to adaptogenic properties are as follows:

  • Korean Ginseng produces no side effects at the level of tonic dosage.

Benefits of Ginseng Usage in Sports Athletics

Ginseng: A Natural Alternative to Anabolic Steroids

For thousands of years ginseng has been used in the east to clear the mind, improve memory, sharpen reflexes, tune and harmonize the body's organs, and to allow the mind and body to work together in perfect balance.
Ginseng root has now become popular amongst athletes as a means of increasing the body's natural abilities, and as a natural alternative to anabolic steroids.
Ginsenocides, the principal active component of ginseng, have been demonstrated to have an action similar to anabolic steroids, and ginseng contains some distinctly steroid-like compounds, including panaxtriol.
However, unlike steroids, ginseng is non-toxic. Thousands of years of regular use in traditional asian medicine have demonstrated that ginseng actually strengthens the body's organs and immune system, and its effects are only improved by long-term use.
Ginseng also acts as an antioxidant, and has been the focus of clinical experiments to aid in the reduction of certain types of cancers, including breast cancer.
Used by the Chinese to improve digestion, ginseng is known to aid in the efficient absorption of nutrients, a major consideration for athletes in obtaining the most benefits from a training diet.
Ginseng is safe to take, even for prolonged periods of time. Ginseng helps cushion against the effects of prolonged activity and fatigue, increases muscle efficiency, deepens energy reserves, extends stamina, and has marked benefits to the circulatory system.
It is generally not necessary to take more than a few grams of ginseng each day to achieve maximum results, and there are some indications that taking a lot of ginseng each day is no more beneficial than ingesting a few grams in the form of dried ginseng root or ginseng extract.
